A Prayer for Our Country

Two questions and answers –

In 1903, Rev. Edward Everett Hale, a Unitarian minister, was named chaplain of the US Senate. When asked, “Do you pray for the senators, Dr. Hale?” Hale responded: “No, I look at the senators and I pray for the country.”

Once a reporter asked AJ Muste: “Do you really think you are going to change the policies of this country by standing out here alone at night in front of the White House with a candle?” He replied softly: “Oh I don’t do this to change the country. I do this so the country won’t change me.”

Whether inside or outside the halls of government, a Unitarian Universalist faith installs in us the need for moral action. If action is our prayer, what do we pray for our country today?
