Painting Icons: Contemplation & Action as a Calling

Attempting to portray the Transcendent in images has been practiced for millennia. The methods and materials in painting Christian Orthodox icons are nearly as old. Barbara will present Iconography as a contemplative practice for the painter and viewer. Icons have been cherished for more than a millennia around the world, though for several centuries Iconoclasts destroyed and forbade icons. It is a visual language much like the familiar tradition of Pysanky egg decorating, linking us to the Earth. She will present slides of icons and images, and bring a series of icons she has painted in her ongoing pursuit of this tradition.
